Fall sports on campus at Wisconsin will be different for fans

For fans, attending games on campus this fall could be a very different experience at Wisconsin.

During Thursday's virtual town hall with football season ticket holders, Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez and Deputy Athletic Director Chris McIntosh detailed some of the challenges of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, as well as some possible changes to fall sports at UW.

Alvarez said that there's nothing quite like 80,000 fans at Camp Randall Stadium, but having a full crowd on campus is still "up in the air." McIntosh added that it wouldn't surprise him if fans would be required to wear masks to Wisconsin games on campus.

Both commented that any measures in place come with safety in mind, for fans as well as players and staff.

Because of the season still being so far away, Alvarez said that it's challenging to make decisions for the fall without knowing how the virus will affect what the University, as well as the NCAA and state, local, and national governments, will do. Alvarez said that after July 4, he thinks there will be a better idea, since the summer preseason program for football begins on July 12.

Also, Alvarez said that the Athletics Department at Wisconsin has not considered cutting sports, like some other colleges. He also said that there has been no discussion about moving their game against Notre Dame at Lambeau Field to a campus location.
