Doug Gottlieb: “I still think Justin Herbert is a ‘TRACTOR’. I think Tua is a bit of a ‘TRAILER.’ He could be a really, really nice trailer, but it feels like there’s a plan already in place that feels a little bit like what the Seahawks did early in Russell Wilson's career before he became a ‘tractor.’ Tua is efficient, he’s solid, he makes the right reads, he’s just not really an explosive thrower of the football. I like Tua but this isn't about likes or dislikes. I think he’s smart, he’s solid, he’s athletic enough, he’s got a good enough arm, and he’s really, really accurate, but he feels like more of a ‘trailer’ than a ‘tractor.’ The first week was no ‘Wow’ plays, the second week was ‘solid’, this third week was ‘he’s really precise and growing on me’, but I’m looking for that ‘IT.’ Maybe there is too much of ‘IT’ with Justin Herbert -- he’s still a turnover guy, but maybe the guys who have those turnovers and ‘go for it’ and have those explosive plays are guys that are going to hurt you early in their career, but there should be more upside later in their career. I don’t know if Tua has that.” (Full Video Above)
Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he thinks Tua Tagovailoa’s NFL ceiling is more game manager than superstar, as Doug says Tua is more of a ‘trailer’ who does his job and plays his role to follow the lead of the team, while Justin Herbert is a ‘tractor' who pulls and carries the team by himself.
Check out the video above as Gottlieb details why he’s concerned that Tua doesn’t have enough upside for Doug to really get behind as the next young star, the same way he feels for Herbert and Joe Burrow.
