Packers Prime: The Birth of the Gunslinger

September 20, 1992, is a day that should forever be celebrated by Packers fans everywhere. Not because of the circumstances, but because of the result.

On the sixth play of their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Packers quarterback Don Majkowski had to be carted off the field with torn ligaments in his left ankle.

Backup quarterback Brett Favre entered the game – and then didn’t leave for the next 16 years. His debut was arguably the most memorable one in franchise history.

Despite losing for most of the game, Favre managed to throw not one, but two touchdown drives in the last eight minutes. The 35-yard “all-go” pass Favre fired to Kitrick Taylor happened with just 13 seconds left on the clock, giving the Packers their first win of the 1992 season, 24-23, but more importantly set the franchise up for an unprecedented run of success that now spans 30 years.

“The Birth of the Gunslinger” features the legendary Jim Irwin and Max McGee on the call and can be heard in its entirety Sunday at noon on your new home for the Packers, 97.3 The Game.
