Mike McCarthy's firing by the Packers surprising, but not unexpected

Sentiments ranged from shocked to I-told-you-so in regards to Sunday's firing of Mike McCarthy as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay lost to Arizona 20-17 at Lambeau Field on Sunday, the final straw for Packers president Mark Murphy and GM Brian Gutekunst.

While McCarthy had success in his tenure in Green Bay, the Packers fizzled on the road this year, going 0-6 before McCarthy was fired on December 2. Green Bay faces incredible odds to make the postseason this year, and will work under interim coach Joe Philbin for the remainder of 2018.

It's only the second time a Super Bowl-winning head coach has been fired by the team he coached to a championship, and the first since 1972. It's also the first time since the 1950's the Packers have used two head coaches in a season.
