Black Hawk/Warren, St. Mary's Springs, Lake Country Lutheran, and Catholic Memorial all took home state titles in the first four championship games at the WIAA State Football Championships at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Thursday. You can hear the full broadcasts below.
Black Hawk/Warren (14-0) won the Division 7 title with a 6-0 shutout over Edgar at the WIAA State Football Championships at Camp Randall Stadium Thursday morning.
The only score of the game came on 30-yard pass from Ethan Williams to Cayden Milz with 1:38 remaining in the first half. The play was set-up by 53-yard run by Jalen Rufenacht on the previous play. The game set the Division 7 championship game record for fewest points scored by both teams.
It appeared as if Edgar may have tied the game midway through the fourth quarter, but a Wildcats’ 33-yard pass for an apparent score was negated by a holding penalty, and a pass to the end zone that went through the hands of the intended receiver in the same series of downs.
St. Mary’s Springs (12-2) won its third straight championship by blanking Regis 7-0 in the Division 6 title tilt at Camp Randall Stadium Thursday afternoon.
The score ties the Division 6 record for the fewest points scored by two teams in a championship game.
The lone score of the game came on the opening drive. The Ledgers marched the ball 80 yards on 19 plays that consumed 10:09 of the clock. Marcus Orlandoni plowed in from a yard out, and Ben Fouch added the extra point to give the Ledgers all the points they needed.
St. Mary’s Springs has now won a membership-leading nine titles.
Lake Country Lutheran (13-1) erased a 13-0 first quarter deficit to upend previously undefeated Stratford in the Division 5 title game of the 2019 State Football Championship at Camp Randall Stadium Thursday evening.
A 43-yard punt return by Colten Schillinger set up the first score of the game on a drive that covered just 25 yards to give Stratford a 7-0 advantage at the 8:06 of the first quarter. The Tigers increased their lead to 13-0 at 3:17 remaining in the first quarter on a 17-yard pass from Max Schwabe to Justin Radke.
The Lightning defense stiffened to allow just 61 yard the rest of the game, including five yards in the entire second half.
Lake Country Lutheran got on the board with 6:19 remaining in the first half on a 5-yard pass from Jacob Studer to Andrew Schumacher, cutting the deficit to 13-7. They tied the game at 13-13 with 8:41 remaining in the game on a 28-yard strike from Luke Haertle to Schumacher. The extra-point was blocked.
With 4:25 remaining in the game, Haertle split the middle of the Tigers’ defense to score on a 20-yard scamper to give the Lightning their first lead at 20-13. Chase Caliendo capped the scoring with a quarterback sack in the end zone for a safety for the final margin of victory.
Catholic Memorial (12-2) won its second straight championship and its third in the past four seasons by rolling past Kiel 35-0 in the Division 4 final at Camp Randall Stadium Thursday night.
The Crusaders controlled the game from the opening kickoff. The Crusaders outgained the Raiders 474-88 in total offense in the game.
Catholic Memorial has now won four titles. Previously, they won the Division 3 championship three times, including last season. Kiel (13-1) finishes runner-up in its first-ever appearance in the title game.
