HSFB: Donovan Hunt keys Brookfield East's 24-21 win over Arrowhead

Senior Donovan Hunt ran for 225 yards, scored two touchdowns and reeled in a game-sealing interception in a thrilling 24-21 Brookfield East win over Arrowhead in the Week 3 edition of The Big 920 High School Game of the Week in Hartland.

Hunt’s one-man show was highlighted by a slashing, 80-yard, first-quarter touchdown run along the left sideline, giving East (3-0, 2-0 Greater Metro) its first points.

The Spartans led into the fourth quarter, 17-7, but after McGath, who also plays safety, left the game with an injury, Arrowhead (1-2, 1-1 Classic 8) closed the gap. East got a one-yard touchdown run with backup junior quarterback Luke Pluemer giving the ball to his brother, senior Nick, upping its lead to 24-7 before Warhawk senior quarterback Tommy Darrow found holes in the McGath-free Spartan secondary. Darrow’s second touchdown pass of the night, a 27-yard catch-and-run, went to fellow senior Carter Gilmore, making it 24-14 at the 6:59 mark. After an East punt, Darrow struck again, capping a seven-play, 85-yard drive with a 15-yard run to bring Arrowhead within three with 2:42 left.

The Warhawks forced East to punt again with seconds remaining before Hunt intercepted a long Darrow pass with three seconds on the clock, effectively ending the game.

Despite likely landing in the smaller-enrollment Division 2 and using a number of players on both offense and defense, East has now beaten two of the schools with the biggest enrollments in Division 1, Arrowhead and Marquette, in consecutive weeks.

Week 4’s Big 920 High School Game of the Week will feature the “National Championship,” a rivalry game between Eisenhower and New Berlin West, two New Berlin schools roughly equidistant from the city’s de facto main street, W. National Ave. The pre-game show will start at 6:45 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7 and Football Friday Night, powered by WisSports.net, at either 9:30 or after the conclusion of the game, whichever is later.
