A 26-yard Connor Leffler field goal was all the scoring the Germantown Warhawks would get, and need, in a road win against the Wauwatosa West Trojans, 3-0, on The Big 920’s High School Game of the Week for Week 2 of the 2019 WIAA season.
Leffler, a senior, got the lone score of the game early in the second quarter before missing two other field goals. West’s only scoring opportunity, a 40-yard, fourth-quarter field goal attempt by junior kicker Ethan Peplinski, fell well short.
Germantown (1-1, 1-1 Greater Metro) outgained the Trojans, 265 yards to 111. Junior quarterback Ethan Sawyer accounted for nearly half the Warhawks’ yards, gaining 132 on 16 carries, but failed to complete any of his three passes. Sophomore Avery Dixon relieved junior Logan Ertl at quarterback for Tosa West (0-2, 0-2 Greater Metro) in a planned second-quarter switch by head coach Andy Kolstad, but struggled to find a rhythm. Dixon gained 78 yards on 18 carries, but completed just 2-of-6 passes, with his final throw intercepted by senior defensive back Mason Durand to lock up the game for the Warhawks.
Week 3 will see The Big 920 High School Game of the Week be Brookfield East at Arrowhead. The pre-game show will start at 6:45 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7 and Football Friday Night, powered by WisSports.net, at either 9:30 or after the conclusion of the game, whichever is later.
