Marquette, Edgewood, Roncalli Win Boys Team Golf Titles

The 94th Annual State Boys Golf Tournament produced team and individual champions in three divisions at University Ridge Golf Course Tuesday. Morning storms caused the Divisions 2 and 3 tournaments to be reduced to 27 holes.

The Division 1 tournament completed the scheduled 36 holes. Marquette won the Division 1 team championship for the second year in a row and for the third time in the last four seasons. The Hilltoppers scored a four-player, 36-hole total of 594 for 18-over-par. Middleton finished runner-up 20 strokes back at +38.

Merrill’s Russell Dettmering sizzled on the second day of competition, going six-under-par to earn the Division 1 individual championship with a -7 score of 137 for 36 holes. It’s the lowest score in the State Tournament since Jordan Niebrugge of Homestead fired a 136 to win the Division 1 title in 2012. Jack Blair of Marquette finished second at -1 with a 143 after placing sixth last season. Former two-time champion Piercen Hunt of Arrowhead finished tied for sixth at +3.

Edgewood captured its third straight Division 2 team title and its fifth overall. The Crusaders shot +32. with a four-player, 27-hole score of 464. Three Crusaders finished within the top individual standings. Lakeland finished second, four strokes back with a +36 score of 468.

Senior Joe Forsting Edgerton won the individual gold medal, shooting a 27-hole score of 108 for even par. He finished tied for 13th last season. Junior Simon Cuskey of Rice Lake finishes runner-up after an eighth-place finish a year ago. He shot a one-over-par 109. Senior James Gilmore of Edgewood, who placed fifth in 2018, and Ty Kretz of Marinette tied for third at +2. Lukas Heckmann, the champion in 2018, finished tied for seventh at +8.

Roncalli won the Division 3 team title, and its first since winning its only other championship in 2009. The Jets scored a 463 to go 61-over-par as a team. Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day finished runner-up for the second straight season. The Challengers finished 11 strokes behind Roncalli with a score of 504.

Junior Drake Wilcox won the individual championship with a one-over-par 109 for 27 holes. He improves on last season’s third-place finish. Senior Jack Rollins of Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day finished three strokes back at +4 after placing 13th last year, and senior Doyle Kelly, who was runner-up last season, finished tied with senior Ian Behringer of Roncalli for third at +6.
