Marquette blasts Southern University 84-41

Markus Howard remained the hottest shooter in the country, hitting his first nine shots, as No. 18 Marquette easily dispatched Southern, 84-41, at Fiserv Forum. Howard's only miss came on his final shot of the night before spending most of the second half on the bench in the easy victory. He went 6-for-6 from three-point land and scored 23 of his 26 points in the first half, needing only 16 minutes of floor time to be the game's top point-getter. The rest of the Marquette team scored 25 first-half points, while Southern (1-12) went into the break with just 17. Sam Hauser added 10 points and nine rebounds for Marquette (11-2), which had 11 different players score. Marquette outrebounded Southern, 53-25. The Jaguars never led after the score was 4-3 in the early minutes. Marquette's next opponent, St. John's, will be a far stiffer test. The game will be Marquette's BIG EAST opener, while the 12-0 Red Storm kick off conference play against Seton Hall tonight. St. John's is the only undefeated and unranked team in the country right now, joining just No. 2 Michigan, No. 4 Virginia, No. 6 Nevada and No. 22 Houston among the ranks of the unbeaten. Start time for the New Year's Day contest at Queens, N.Y.'s Carnesecca Arena, and on FS1, will be 6 p.m. CST.
