Marquette won its first official game at Fiserv Forum, beating 2018 March Madness Cinderella UMBC, 67-42, last night.
Markus Howard and Sam Hauser led the way for Marquette with 15 points, despite Howard shooting just 2-for-12 from behind the arc. Theo John scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds and recorded three of Marquette's nine blocked shots as a team. Marquette was one of the nation's worst defensive teams statistically last year, but with more depth in toe this year, MU held UMBC to under 19 percent shooting in a second half where the Retreivers scored just 18 points. UMBC was also held under 23 percent shooting for the game.
Vaunted freshman Joey Hauser made his Marquette debut, playing over 24 minutes off the bench and scoring six points to go with seven rebounds. Howard and Sam Hauser each had eight rebounds, while Howard recorded seven of Marquette's 12 assists.
Marquette opens the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament against Bethune-Cookman at Fiserv Forum Saturday at 3 p.m.
