Marquette advanced to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals with a 101-92 win over Oregon in front of a loud crowd of 3,618 fans at the Al McGuire Center yesterday.
Andrew Rowsey led all scorers with 29 points on 6-of-11 three-point shooting. Five Marquette players scored in double-figures.
Though Oregon brought the game within single-digits with the final basket, Marquette never led by less than double-digits in the NIT's experimental second and third quarters and was up 25 with eight minutes remaining.
As the second seed in its quarter of the bracket, Marquette gets to host Tuesday's quarterfinal against fourth-seeded Penn State for the right to go to Madison Square Garden. The Nittany Lions upset longtime Marquette rival and top seed Notre Dame, 73-63, on Saturday. Penn State never trailed against the Fighting Irish on St. Patrick's Day.
As has been the case for the first two Marquette NIT games, the quarterfinal will be at The Al. Tip time is set for 6 p.m.
