It’s the announcement that brings the most significant player in nearly 50-years, back to the Green Bay Packers. Today the Packers announce their plans to induct Bret Favre into the team’s Hall of Fame and retire his #4 jersey. The Packers Hall of Fame induction will happen in 2015. Favre played 16-seasons for the Packers, but has been “unwelcomed” since finishing his career with a season in New York (Jets) and two seasons with the hated Vikings. Now, He’ll be back, Favre said “I'm truly looking forward to celebrating and sharing this special moment with all of the great fans of the Green Bay Packers. Go Packers!”
There is little doubt, a small but vocal minority—filled with hate-- will scream with “bitter beer face” … “He’s not welcome here, he’s a traitor, he’s a Viking!!” It’s the same group that “hates” on an 18-year old phenoms that leave Wisconsin to play for North Carolina or Duke. It’s the same group that ignores the cold-hearted nature of the league with aging Hall of Fame QB’s forced to finish careers in another uniform-- (Joe Montana in Kansas City, Johnny Unitas as a Charger, and Joe Namath with the Los Angeles Rams)
Favre should and will return to a hero’s welcome. My guess—he’ll be in Green Bay for a game this season. The announcement that Favre will enter the Packers’ Hall of Fame and have his jersey retired in 2015 is the ice-breaker. It’s time to fully embrace the 2nd most important era in Packers’ history. We already celebrate Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, and Reggie White…now it’s time to welcome Favre back home. He is the greatest Quarterback in Packers’ history and there has never been a player in team history that was more fun to watch play.
The 3-time MVP will be back where he belongs. He said this on his website: “It was a tremendous honor to play 16 years for the Green Bay Packers. Now to have my name placed among others such as Starr, Hornung, Kramer, Taylor, Lambeau, Nitschke, Lombardi, Davis, White and Hutson is a special honor that I share with all of my teammates and coaches, and that would not have been possible but for the foresight of Ron Wolf, the greatest GM In the history of the NFL.
I'm truly looking forward to celebrating and sharing this special moment with all of the great fans of the Green Bay Packers.
As for those knuckleheads that will complain and want to boo, I’ve been told…you can’t fix stupid.
