Saturday June 7th 2014 is the 146th Belmont Stakes, and the third race in horse racing's Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown is comprised of the Kentucky Derby which is 10 furlongs, The Preakness which is 9.5 furlongs and the Belmont Stakes which is 12 furlongs. The races are 1 1/4 miles, 1 3/16th miles and 1 1/2 miles long respectively.

The Belmont with it's length, is set at "the true English classic distance" which in essence is the true test of a champion thoroughbred...considering... it is the "Sport of Kings." The Belmont best defines the three year olds as "thoroughbreds," exposing their speed, strength as well as their stamina, which have all been passed down though 200 years of genetics.

The chestnut colored California Chrome with his white stockings and blaze, will enter the Saturday's race on a 6 race winning streak. A streak which includes the Kentucky Derby, and the Preakness, he will try to become the first thoroughbred to win the elusive Triple Crown since Affirmed did it in 1978.

The three year old was foaled February 18th, 2011. At this year's Kentucky Derby he won by 1 3/4 lengths with a time of 2:03:56, and followed that win with a win at the Preakness by 1 1/2 lengths and a finish time of 1:54:84.

California Chrome, the odds on favorite will be starting out of the second gate where 3 of the 11 Triple Crown winners have started. The colt who does not seem to lose focus will donning nasal strips and will need 70 more strides then he did in the Preakness to pull out horse racing's trifecta.
